Rinse After Every Use: Encourage your child to rinse their mouthguard under cool water immediately after using their guard to remove any debris and saliva. (Rinsing with warm or hot water can alter the fit of the guard.)
Brush Gently: Use a toothbrush (different from their everyday toothbrush) to gently scrub the mouthguard. This will help to remove residue and bacteria. Please note that abrasive toothpaste should not be used to clean the guard. (I recommend using a liquid soft soap to reduce scratching the surface of the guard. Scratches on the guard give more areas for the bacteria to breed. This is why a different toothbrush is recommended.)
Weekly Soaking: Soak the mouthguard in cleaning tablets designed for mouthguards weekly. This can help eliminate deep-seated bacteria and freshen the guard.
Ventilated Storage: Store the mouthguard in a well-ventilated case to reduce moisture and prevent bacteria buildup. Bacteria thrive in closed, damp environments. (Remind them that the case should be cleaned too.)
Mouthguards are essential for athletes of all sports. Following these practices can greatly reduce the risk of injuries and infections related to dirty mouthguards. Some of my favorite products can be found on my Amazon page.
